Over 1 million catalans have taken to the streets in a mass protest aimed at pressuring the Spanish government for more regional autonomy in Catalonia.

The march held in Barcelona city on Saturday was a direct answer to Spain’s consitutional court ruling denying Catalonia the autonomy to call itself a nation. Protestors held Catalan flags and banners claiming “We are a nation. We decide.” The court ruling also said that the Catalan language should not take presedence over the Spanish language.

Catalonians was forbidden from speaking their language under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1939-1975) leaving the region with a sour aftertaste to this day.
