The tourism sector in Spain entered a serious crisis in 2008 and according to forecasts by the Alianza para la Excelencia Turistica (Exceltur), the sector will not recover until 2010.

The executive vice president, Jose Luis Zoreda, said today in a press conference that the tourism sector [in Spain] began feeling a considerable change in cycle at the beginning of summer. The figures of 2008 already show a 1.1% decrease compared to figures from 2007.

As northern Europeans face harsh realities at home with the economic crisis affecting countries throughout the European Union, they will be less inclined to travel abroad. In early January bookings for cottages in the UK have surged as consumers opt for holidays at home this year.
