The big winners in the Catalan Elections this weekend were Artur Mas (CiU) and Alicia Sanchez Camacho (PP).

Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s Socialist Party received a distinct blow from voters who were angry over Catalunya’s economic woes. The PSC party landed 28 seats in the Catalan parliament, considerably less compared with the 37 previously achieved in the 2006 elections.

The Convergence and Union (CiU), a conservative Catalan nationalist coalition won 62 of the 135 seats.

The right-wing People’s Party (PP), the main national opposition managed to win 18 seats becoming the third biggest strength in the Catalan parliament.
