Recent data reveals how Spain has become the world’s sixth largest weapons exporter.

According to the latest figures released by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, the export of weapons and defense equipment in 2009 increased by more than 44% over the previous year.

Spain has increased its arms sales six-fold between 2001 and 2009. Revenue generated from the sale of arms has grown from 231.18 million euros to 1,346.52 million euros.

According to the Institute for Peace Research (SIPRI), based in Sweden, Spain now occupies the sixth place in the ranking of global arms exporting countries, led by the United States and Russia.
