A call for stronger economic ties between Spain and Portugal has been in demand, since the beginning of the European economic crisis. The two regions have been tied to each other for the last 25 years, ever since the European Economic Community came into existence.
The Spanish Prime Minister – Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero emphasized on mutual team work among the whole European community, so that their joint efforts could lead to a new horizon of financial solutions.
Zapatero was addressing a group of reporters and journalists at the Madrid Royal Palace, while marking a significant sign on the accession of Spain and Portugal to the European Economic Community, also known as the European Union these days.
“Spain will help the EU to move forward and deal with this crisis at hands” – said Zapatero. Over the years, Spain and Portugal grew stronger on the basis of their rapid modernization, a brief period of economic stability and solidarity – but despite of all these factors, both countries have been weakened by the downfall of single currency – i.e. Euro.
Among Zapatero’s address, the VIPs included; Portuguese Prime Minister – Jose Socrates, the President of European Parliament – Jerzy Buzek and the Portuguese European Commission President – Jose Manuel Barroso.
All of them also shared their views at an earlier ceremony during the same day, in the Jeronimos Monastery – Lisbon. Socrates called for a European response based on teamwork, cohesion between states and the common people of Europe.
