Lionel Messi was awarded the title of FIFA World Player of the Year at FIFA’s grand ceremony in Zurich today. Messi, who had a terrific year, scored 1047 points in voting was way ahead of his nearest competitors. Christiano Ronaldo who scored 357 points came second followed by Xavier Hernández i Creus aka Xavi, who came third with 196 points.

The Argentinean who is labeled by Maradona as his ‘successor’ scored 38 goals in 51 matches in competitive football this year and helped FC Barcelona to win an unprecedented treble of titles which include the Spanish League and Cup, the Champions League and Barcelona’s first Club world Cup in which he scored in extra time to beat Estudiantes 2-1.

The women’s title was awarded to Brazil’s Marta for a fourth year in a row and the Fair play award was given to late English player Bobby Robson.

Christiano Ronaldo was honored for scoring the best goal of the year with a forty meter shot against Portuguese club Porto in the Champions League.
