Mauritanian police located the position of three abducted aid workers in a massive man hunt launched to find them. The location is estimated to be roughly 150 km from the capital city of Nouakchott, Mauritanian police said.
Joseph Ramon Jimenez, representative of the aid organization Barcelona Accio Solidaria, of which the three abducted workers were members, said that the organization would meet the Spanish ambassador in Spain to discuss the negotiations to be conducted with the kidnappers.
The aid workers are said to be ‘well’ and militants are negotiating with Mauritanian military and the Polisario Front, an independent movement in neighboring Western Sahara.
Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said that there is strong evidence that the abduction has been done by AQLIM (Al-Qaeda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb).
In 2007, four French tourists were killed in Mauritania by suspected gunmen of a group linked to Al-Qaeda.
