Spanish workers from the Opel plant in Zaragoza have said that they intend to call a strike to show their opposition to a takeover of the company by Magna International. The unions have arranged a meeting to discuss what form the strike would take, and when it will take place.
The workers are unhappy at plans by Magna that include a drastic reduction in the number of employees at the Spanish plant, as well as at Vauxhall, in the UK. The unions are saying that it is very possible that a strike could be held, over the company’s refusal to negotiate a reasonable solution, which does not involve mass layoffs.
The company is set to take a controlling share of the company from GM, which would result in 20% of all European workers losing their jobs, with as many as 1600 being lost from Zaragoza.
