Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar seems to big hit on his hands with his latest movie entitled Agora. In just four days it earned over $10 million at the Spanish domestic box office making it Spain’s most successful film this year.
The odd fact about this latest Spanish movie offering is that it is an English language production starring British actress Rachel Weisz. The film was produced by three Spanish movie production houses Telecinco Cinema, Himenoptero and Mod Producciones, none of which however produced an English language movie before.
The film tells the story of Hypatia of Alexandria who was a philosopher and astronomer who had a relationship with her slave. Its weekend box office was the second highest ever recorded in Spain and bolds well for its release in the US just in time for the Christmas crowds.
