The mayor of the popular resort town of Benidorm suffered a double humiliation yesterday when she was pushed out of office, which would be embarrassing enough, but to add insult to injury it was her own mother who pushed one of the country’s major political figures out of the town hall.

A member of her own party had sided against her in a motion of censure to eject the mayor Leire Pajin. In all, 13 politicians, including Maite Iraola, the mayor’s mother, voted in favour of the censure bringing a rapid end to her term as Benidorm’s mayor.

Two weeks ago the mayor had threatened to throw out all the socialists in her party including her mother and said she didn’t care what their last name was, this was avoided by the Socialists as they resigned from the party, but kept their seats in the town hall, which allowed them to vote against the mayor.
