Spanish readers of the centre left El Pais newspaper got a surprise when they opened the front page to find a large picture of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapetero portrayed in a caricature atop a “help of a sinking Spanish map”. To top it off, the map was circled by sharks that had the words deficit and unemployment written on them.
El Pais stated that the cartoon is simply an ongoing feature in its coverage of the crisis that is facing Spain.
However, government insiders and outsiders think that the harsh coverage is the result of a clash that is the El Pais parent company Grupp Prise is engaged in with its rival, Mediapro who the government granted digital television rights to.
Even more, the power struggle between the two companies is based in Spain’s two largest cities, Barcelona and Madrid making the fight personal as well as business based.
