Russian President Dmitry Medvedev lands in Spain on official state visit. The President is meeting with King Juan Carlos as well as Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
The Russian president and the Spanish king had their first meeting last June. Back then Medvedev affirmed successful development of bilateral economic and humanitarian contacts. “Our people love each other; our leaders know each other well; all we have to do is work,” the king replied.
A Spanish government statement says during the trip Medvedev will discuss Russia’s relations with the European Union and NATO and other issues such as the international financial crisis and bilateral ties.
The Russian President also mentioned on Spanish television that Russia had nothing to do with the close of the Manas air base.
“The Kyrgyzstan leadership’s decision to close the Manas air base in Kyrgyzstan was a sovereign one. They gave their reasons for this decision, as far as I understand,” explained Medvedev. In the interview with TVE, Medvedev also highly valued the friendship between the two countries.
The full interview with the Spanish media can be found on the Kremlin website.
