Catalunya hopes to reduce the use of plastic bags by as much as 50%. Recent changes in legislation will no longer allow retail businesses in Catalonia, to offer free plastic bags to their clients: they will have to charge for them or discount the cost in case the client doesn’t want it. The opposition is not happy with the initiative at all since they claim “the measures are unilateral and do not offer any alternatives”. The opposition is not the only party voicing complaints, the association of Ecologists of Barcelona are in uproar “saying the measure is insufficient because it is not dissuasive”.

It’s hard to understand the complications experienced in trying to head towards a greener future. Other EU countries as well as countries like Switzerland have had dissuasive measures in place for years already. What’s taking Spain so long to pull up it’s socks?
