The Catalan Parliament has approved a ban on bullfighting Wednesday with 68 votes in favour, 55 against and 9 abstentions.

Catalunya becomes the second Spanish autonomous community to veto bullfighting, after the Canary Islands, who banned bullfighting in 1991.

The citizen platform Prou! (Enough!) that collected 180,000 signatures has stated that the ban by the Catalan parliament provides hope for a ban in other Autonomous Communities throughout Spain.

The ban on bullfighting will go into force in 2012, closing Barcelona’s only remaining bullright, La Monumental.

Pro bullfighting groups have threatened with legal action to claim over 300 million euros in compensation to offset the losses of the ban.
