There are very few entertainers that can claim to still be working after 50-years in show business. Those that come to mind include such household names as Lionel Blair, Bruce Forsyth, Des O’Connor and Shirley Bassey along with the Costa Blanca’s very own Ricky Valance. Over the last few months he’s been working with Fiona and Peter from Jukebox Legends playing in a variety of local venues, cumulating in last weekend’s performances in Mojacar and Torrevieja’s Restaurante Los Arcos, where he performed to a full house of 250 guests on Friday May 21.

Ricky Valance – 50 years in Show bizRicky is now headed back to the United Kingdom to visit family, friends and his summer tour. With 2010 being the fiftieth anniversary of ‘Tell Laura I Love Her’ reaching number one in the charts, he’s very much in demand for Radio and TV interviews and recently has been featured on BBC Wales and locally on TKO Gold, Exite FM, Spectrum FM and Bay Radio along with a Web TV interview for Costa Blanca TV. He’s recently finished recording a new double album and shows no sign of slowing down while he still has the voice and health to continue working.

On stage, Ricky still looks the part and if one closes one’s eyes, still sounds like someone in their 20’s. His act contains a mix of songs from his Country Albums, recorded in Nashville back in the late 1990’s, through show tunes, a few poignant favourites of his own choosing and the crowd pleasing songs that everyone sings along to, from the sixties and seventies.

Ricky has always been one to try and help those who can’t help themselves, through charity performances and celebrity auctions and last week had no hesitation in signing an England football shirt to support local Torrevieja man Steve Hall, who is presently cycling around all 92 English league clubs, picking up signed shirts, all in the name of raising awareness of the world’s 42-million refugees, in the run up to World Cup 2010. Steve and Ricky go back a lot of years to the days when Ricky used to play in Charity Pro-Am competitions on the Costa Blanca.

Ricky will be back in the autumn for possibly his swansong on the Costa Blanca, as he would like to spend more time with his family, especially his grandchildren, back in England. His two Grandsons have picked up Rugby honours and his granddaughter and great-granddaughter show promise in the theatrical world. Ricky is also in negotiations with a number of publishers to pen his Autobiography, which has all the elements for a film biopic in the making. Few can claim to be both happily married to the same lady and still working in show businesses after fifty years. Ricky Valance is one of the few who can claim this achievement.
