It’s not often that that Torrevieja’s Teatro Municipal Auditorium, is too small for its purpose but this was the case on Friday 21 May 2010, when 300 children, their coaches, parents and friends descended on the theatre to pay tribute to the athletes of the Municipal Sports Schools, whom have achieved remarkable results in the Spanish Championships plus provincial and autonomous competitions.

Municipal Sports Schools in Torrevieja honoured

The mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, was present accompanied by the Councillor for Sports, Daniel Plaza, councilors Joaquín Albaladejo, Dolon Eduardo, José Antonio Sánchez, Eduardo Gil, Pilar González, Agustina Estevez, Tomas Arenas, the delegate José Manuel Pizana plus Socialist Spokesman Manuel Vera and councillors Maria Jesús Díaz, M ª Luisa Zafra and Guadalupe Diaz.

The Major and Snr. Plaza thanked all those who had participated in this sporting year and heralded the opening of the new sports city complex which they hope will further the quality of sporting achievements within the city.

The simple but effective ceremony honoured all those that have achieved success this year including in-line Hockey, Judo, Athletics, Swimming, Rowing, Handball, Basketball, Futsal, Football, Rugby, Tennis and Cycling. The only notable absentee was the Infant Handball Team, trained by Carlos Griñán who could not collect their medals as they were contesting the Spanish Championship in Ciudad Real.

Each year, coinciding with the beginning of school calendar, Torrevieja’s Municipal Sports Schools provide activities for thousands of young people by creating programs such as Torrevieja’s learn to swim and sports for all. In all, more than 4,000 students participated last year.

Councillor for Sports, Daniel Plaza noted that this year, full use had been made of the Pavilion Cecilio Gallego, Artificial Grass Football Fields, Athletics Track, the Municipal Pool and the Palacio de Deportes Infanta Cristina while in the next few weeks, welcome additions shall be operational, including the new football fields, rugby pitch, tennis and squash courts, cricket facilities all of which bid well for the future development of player’s careers and social life, due to the municipal sports schools.
