Food basketThe Spanish Consumer Price Index increased by 1.1% in April in from the information obtained by the INE National Statistics Institute over the weekend.

This is the highest rate of inflation which has been calculated yearly from December 2008. The largest culprits leading to the high inflation were the footwear and clothing industries, which skyrocketed by 9.5%, transport which rose by 1.5% and housing which saw an increase of 0.7%.

The inflation, with the food and energy prices exempted, decreased by three tenths down to –0.1% in April, pushing inflation into negative territory for the very first time since August 1986 when the calculations were first done.
