Passengers across Spain have a reason to smile as a new airport was opened at Lleida in the Catalunya region on Sunday. The Generalitat Regional Government in Catalunya is behind the funding of the entire project of building the airport, which has an international classification as well.

Although the airport was first used today for the landing of an Airbus 320 Vueling flight from Barcelona, commercial flights will begin on February 5. Jose Montilla, Generalitat de Cataluña President, was on board the flight which also carried about 160 journalists.

The airport is believed to be able to cater to 50,000 passengers during its first year, and the number is expected to steadily swell to 395,000 users per year in the next ten years.
