In a shootout with a Civil Guard Officer, suspected ETA terrorists’ attempt to cause an explosion at the barracks in Lietza, Navarra was foiled and a disaster was avoided. In the incident that happened early on Sunday, the terrorists escaped from being arrested after the Civil Guard officer thwarted their attempt of planting an explosive device close to the barracks which could have had disastrous consequences.

The terrorists reportedly shot the officer in the arm after he asked them to reveal their identities. The officer has undergone surgery on his arm and is reported by the EFE news agency to be out of danger now. A terrorist is also said to have been injured, but the news is unconfirmed.

The shootout happened at about 3.30 on early Sunday morning and when the area was later searched by the Civil Guard, two grenade launchers were also found within a radius of 100 meters from the barracks.

The ETA’s last attack in Navarra was a bomb explosion in a car on October 30 last year in the parking lot of Navarra University in Pamplona. More than 20 people were injured in the incident. Sunday’s attack is believed to be a response to the arrest of 34 members of Segi, a youth organization which is pro-ETA last Tuesday, when raids were conducted across Navarra and Basque Country
