Judge Santiago Pedraz of the National Court, Spain ordered to start with the proceedings of trial of the two Somali pirates Abdou Willy and Raagegeesey today. They were arrested by a Spanish frigate when they left the hijacked trawler Alakrana. According to the prosecutor, there are 36 cases of illegal detention and one violent robbery committed with weapons pressed against them.
The charge of Illicit association has however been withdrawn which suggests that the detainees would be sentenced for less than 6 years if found guilty. The trial could take place in the last week of November. The sentence could mean the repatriation of pirates under the Ley de Extranjería Foreigners’ Law.
The Somali pirates are still holding Alakrana and its 36 crew members as hostages and demanding release of captured Somali pirates.
