90 Spanish soldiers have departed by plane from El Prat de Llobregat (Barcelona) bound for Herat, Afghanistan.

These are the first of 900 troops Spain has committed to Afghanistan; their tour of duty will last for four months.

The new force is supplemented by the helicopter unit of Maneuver Helicopter Battalion, and a Logistics Support Group from Zaragoza.

Most of the soldiers are engineers who will be working on various construction projects in Afghanistan.
