French police officers stopped to assist a distressed driver near the south of France resort town of Poitiers yesterday, got more than they bargained for. The officers became suspicious of the driver of the VW Golf and requested identification, he became nervous and the officers detained him.

They then discovered that the man was armed with a pistol. Once back at the police station he was identified as Zuhaitz Errasti Goiti, an alleged member of ETA.

28-year-old Goiti was arrested in France four years ago on terrorism charges, and a Paris court sentenced him to 4 years in prison for conspiracy to commit terrorist acts.

He was transferred to Spain in November last year, where the court released him on bail, he then went into hiding, and was not heard of again until his arrest.
