Spain’s prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research was given to Martin Cooper and Raymond Tomlinson who are both from the US, and honoured them respectively for their contributions to innovation in email and mobile phones.

The Prince of Asturias Award for Sports was also given out to Russian Yelena Isinbayeva, the city of Berlin was given the Award for Concord, and Ismail Kadare from Albania received the Award for Letters.

Additionally, the Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences was given to veteran British wildlife broadcaster, and highly respected naturalist, David Attenbourough, and the University of Mexico was given the Award for the Communication and Humanities.
