Police in France have detained two members of the Basque separatist group ETA, one of whom is said to be a ranking official in a Basque political party, Aitor Elizaran Aguilar.
The other person arrested in the resort is town of Carnac, was Oihana San Vicente. This is the latest of several arrests by French authorities of ETA members, as they continue joint efforts with Spanish antiterrorism operatives.
According to the Spanish government, Elizaran is one of the leaders of the political arm of ETA; they also believe that he may actually be the political leader of the group, having taken over from Francisco Javier Lopez Pena, following his arrest last year.
According to French news reports, when detained, the suspects were armed.
