One of operas three tenors, Spaniard, Placido Domingo is the first-ever recipient of the Birgit Nilsson prize, which he referred to in his acceptance speech as the equivalent of a musical Nobel prize.

He received the award in recognition of his life’s work in Opera. The award was named after Birgit Nilsson a soprano from Sweden who performed with Domingo on many occasions, and who died four years ago.

Domingo stated that throughout his career he had been given many highly desirable awards, but that none he had ever received filled him with so much emotion.
