Five high-ranking members of the former political wing of the Basque separatists, Batasuna, have been arrested by Spanish authorities. The arrests include Arnaldo Otegi who is a former leader of the political party.

Six years ago the organisation became illegal, because of what Spain considers to be strong links between the political party, and ETA. The arrests were made after Baltasar Garzon, a Spanish High Court judge issued warrants for their detention.

He was presented with evidence that suggested the party was trying to start up again, and were doing so with cooperation, and input, from ETA.

Another man arrested was the secretary of LAB union, and a well-known Basque separatist supporter, Rafael Diez Usabiaga. It is believed that his union’s offices were being used for meetings by the group.
