Spain promised the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai, that the country would open dialogue between Harare and the European Union during Spain’s new, upcoming, role as president of the EU.
Tsvangirai is visiting Spain in order to receive a lifetime achievement award, and while in the country met with the Prime Minister of Spain, Zapatero and the Foreign Minister of Spain, Miguel Angel Moratinos.
During the meeting, Moratinos gave Tsvangirai an overview of how Spain plans to begin its six month EU presidency in January. He stated that the country welcomed new dialogue between Zimbabwe and the EU back in June, and that new visits to the country by the EU are continually fruitful.
About ten years ago relations between the two countries became strained, after elections in the country led to human rights abuse allegations and mass violence.
