The statistics office for Europe, Eurostat announced Thursday that Spain’s youth unemployment rate hit 39.2 per cent in August 2009. Spain led the list as having the highest rate, with Lithuania at 31.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2009.
Spain’s overall unemployment rate was stated at 18.9 per cent in August, compared to July’s 18.5 per cent. The overall unemployment rate in Europe hit historic highs of 9.6 per cent, the highest level in over 10 years.
Overall in August, the number of people that became unemployed soared by 165,000 people, totaling 15.16 million people.
