The Spanish Government backed an initiative on Wednesday that will allow tens of thousands of bodies that were buried during the civil war near the mausoleum of Francisco Franco outside of Madrid, to be dug up, so that they can be identified, and reburied by family members.

Many of the bodies buried in the area are opponents of Franco who were killed during the civil war of 1936-1939. The mass graves are found at the Valley of the Fallen, where there are estimated to be between 40,000 to 60,000 bodies.

The identification process is set to be completed in the coming next six months, after which, those who have family members buried near the mausoleum will be able to rebury the bodies at a place of their choosing.
