Young people in Valencia are turning away from drink and drugs in comparison with three years ago. A survey of 48 educational establishments for all age groups has revealed that 61% of students had drunk alcohol in the past 30 days, this compared well to 2006 when over 70% admitted drinking.

The students nearly all considered cocaine to be a dangerous drug (95%) and 75% even considered cannabis to be dangerous to health. They also discovered that the use of legally available snuff was much more common than expected, especially amongst females with cannabis being more of a “man’s” drug.

Students first time taking cannabis averages 14.5 years old, other “soft” illegal drugs 13.5, and the average age for the use of “heavy” drugs such as coke, ecstasy, speed and others is 15. Another surprising drug of choice for 15 year olds is steroids.
