The once divided city of Berlin is the recipient of the Spanish Prince of Asturias prize it was announced yesterday, the prize was given in recognition of the city’s promotion of harmony and peace in Europe.

The award was given to the city because organisers believe that the city has over the twenty years since the fall of the Berlin Wall managed to bring peace and harmony to the country. This week is the 20th anniversary of the moment on November 9, 1989 that saw people power overwhelmed the symbolic barrier dividing the East and West and the two halves of the city of Berlin.

The Prize symbolizes that not only did the falling of the wall effectively end European communism but also, it reunited families and loved ones from the two divided sectors. The prize comes with €50,000 as well as a Joan Miro sculpture.
