The number of foreign tourists that visited Spain until July this year, had dropped 10.3 per cent according to the latest figures revealed by the Ministry of Tourism on Friday. The drop in July alone was 6.1 per cent compared to the 10 per cent drop in June, compared to last year’s figures.
A total of 30.2 million tourists visited Spain, 10.3 per cent less than in the same period in 2008. Over 3 million tourists less. Tourists arrivals from Britain dropped 16.2 per cent and arrivals from Germany 10 per cent.
The harshest drop in tourism was registered in the southern area of Spain, in the province of Andalucia. Once a top destination, the Costa del Sol this year suffered an 11 per cent drop in visitors.
What fails to be noted is the huge drop in spending. Given the immense pricing wars from airlines, hotels and car hire companies to restaurants and other leisure and entertainment venues, the 10 per cent drop has a much higher impact on revenue than the statistics may lead to believe.
