The premature baby of the Morrocan woman who died June 29 from swine flu while 28-weeks pregnant, has died from a medical error.

Medical staff had made the “terrible mistake” of feeding the baby by injecting a milk formula into a vein as opposed to feeding it through the nose via a tube into the stomach.

“This is the gravest negligence for which there is no excuse,” said the hospital’s general director at a press conference. “As yet we don’t know why the mix up occurred since the products are clearly labelled”.

The Madrid regional government has defended the medical care she was given. But the woman’s family, which lives in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on Morocco’s northern coast, plans to sue two hospitals, one of which is Gregorio Maranon, for negligence, the newspaper El Pais has reported.

Spanish media have closely followed the case of the mother and child.

There are more than 1,000 confirmed cases of swine flu in Spain, according to the health ministry.

Spain has ordered 18 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine against the swine flu virus.
