18 million people will be able to benefit from the recently ordered swine flu vaccines, according to a statement made Thursday by Trinidad Jiménez, Spain’s Health Minister.

Following the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), and taking into account the group of most vulnerable in Spain, the government has decided to order vaccines for 30% of the population as well as an additional 10% reserve.

The vaccines are expected to be delivered in Autumn, just in time for the cold, when the swine flu virus (H1N1) is expected to spread more rapidly. Currently Spain has 760 cases of confirmed swine flu, as well as one death.

“The current weather conditions are preventing the virus from reaching its maximum intensity,” the minister said. “We will have to wait until Autumn to see the true picture”
