Most of us are well aware of the extreme temperatures that Spain has experienced over the past few weeks, with Madrid even seeing snow and having to temporarily close down their airport last Friday.

What comes as an even greater shock is the doubling of cases of flu in the province of Valencia. In the first week of 2009 there were 113.5 cases per 100,000 citizens, which doubles the rate registered towards the end of 2008, which was at 67 cases.

It goes without saying that as the temperatures continue to fall, we will see a further increase in these figures.
